From Tussock Country to Timberlands
Early Maori were probably the first to find the hot, bubbling pools secluded in the upland tussock country. Pioneer drovers were grateful for the therapeutic waters too, as they moved their flock between Nelson and Christchurch.
Thomas Hanmer arrived in Canterbury in 1852 and helped in the survey of the district. As was the custom with influential settlers, his name was first applied to the Hanmer River, later the Hanmer Plains, subsequently becoming the alpine village of Hanmer Springs.
Around the turn of the 20th century expansive forests were planted and a timber industry burgeoned. It is this mix of mountains, rivers, forests and thermal pools which give Hanmer Springs its very appealing character.
Nowdays the drovers tents and huts are gone, replaced by a selection of accommodation choices ranging from five star bed & breakfasts to hotels, lodges, motels, rental holiday homes, backpackers and motor camps.
These are complemented by fine restaurants, cheerful cafes, bars, boutique shopping and a myriad of recreation and adventure activities. Our tradition of hospitality in Hanmer Springs dates back over 150 years. Welcome to our village, just 90 minutes from Christchurch - we hope you will enjoy your visit and return many times.
